12.6.1 Syllabic Consonants in Dutch

Although syllabic /l, m, n, ŋ/ are quite common in conversational-style Dutch in words and phrases like tafelopenbaarop z’n tenen’op z’n kant’, their occurrence is more restricted than in American English. In Northern and Eastern Dutch accents, however, syllabic consonants also occur in other contexts, as in lopen /ˈlo.pm̩/, eten /ˈe.tn̩/, bonen /ˈbo.nn̩/.
