Introduction

This open textbook supports the American English Phonetics course as taught by the English Department of Radboud University Nijmegen and is the theoretical companion to A Course of American English Pronunciation.
The book guides you through the beginnings of American English phonetics and is specifically geared towards improving your understanding of correct American English pronunciation. It is primarily intended for students of American English at Radboud University Nijmegen and its contents are elaborated on and explained in the lectures. Students at RU are provided with course assignments that help them digest and apply the theory. The course is set up with Dutch L1 speakers in mind, but can also be helpful to speakers of other languages who wish to learn more about the theory behind the acquisition of a near-native American English accent.

The text was originally written and edited by Ton Broeders, Carlos Gussenhoven, and Victoria Urkewich. The course has been taught since the start of the American Studies program in 1988. Former teachers were Susan Davidsmeyer, Emily Embree, and Joe Niski; current teacher is Nicole Verberkt.
