Listen to the following pairs. Note the difference in duration between the vowel in the first member of each pair, which is relatively short, and that of the second member, which is roughly twice as long. Vowels are reduced in length before fortis consonants (i.e. / p, t, k, f, θ, s, ʃ /). Before lenis consonants ( i.e. before / b, d, g, v, ð, z, ʒ /) and word-finally, they are fully long.
